We serve delicious food and drink in a very special place:
The Refectory at St Davids is the end-product of a
stunning restoration of the ruined cloisters at the
famous Cathedral.
Fitted in the medieval grade 1 listed St Mary's Hall,
The Refectory uses interior fittings that are unashamedly
modern, including a remarkable raised mezzanine level
set away from the walls on slanted legs, which offers
wonderful views through huge arched windows. The result
is a welcoming space where visitors can sit and gaze
out at the stunning cathedral, contemplate the secluded
gardens or admire the newly renovated cloisters.
The Dean and Chapter have been planning the creation
of The Refectory for many years. and have long wanted
to respond to the increasing pressures on the cathedral
brought about by the large numbers of pilgrims, tourists
and visitors.
In order to do this on a very cramped site, the only
option was to seek to recover the spaces lost in the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This meant the
recreation of the destroyed fourteenth century cloisters,
allowing the Dean and Chapter once again to link the
Cathedral with St Mary's Hall and to provide much
needed additional space. In addition to the Refectory,
the Cloisters Project brought the magnificent new
Treasury, and the bright, splendid two storey cloisters,
which match the original 16th century blueprint. (You
can hire the Cloisters rooms for your own use. See
Contacts for more
information.)
The Refectory opened for business in May 2006.
Bill Sewell, the director of the café has
other cafés in London and Hereford including
two in churches. His cafés specialise in fresh
high quality homemade food served simply in beautiful
places. (See Contacts
for websites for Bill's other cafés.)
Bill is also the author of two books. Food From The
Place Below, and Feasts From The Place Below, both
of which can be purchased at The Refectory.
